Lakes Entrance

Australian Holidays Ad

Lakes Entrance lies in the far east of the state of Victoria on the famous ninety mile beach. An inland system of lakes provides a holiday playground for holiday makers from all over Victoria. It is located 320 kilometers east of Melbourne, and by Australian standards that is not very far at all. It comes alive during the holiday periods with tens of thousands of people descending on the town to go fishing and kayaking in the lakes, surf on the patrolled beaches or venture out onto the open ocean through the man made passage to go whale watching or deep sea fishing. Lakes Entrance lies almost at sea level and the lakes themselves provide a large navigable waterway for small craft. There is a large commercial fishing industry and many trawlers operate from the town. Fresh seafood is always on the menu here. Along the waterfront region, which is well away from the local residential area, are many caravan parks, camping areas, sops, cafes and restaurants that all combine to provide a wonderful holiday atmosphere. A popular footbridge across Cunninghame Arm links the town esplanade with the sand dunes and the beach.

The shore line here is known as Cunninghame Arm Inlet and there are excellent marina facilities located here. Many passing yachts cruising around the Australian coast call in here for a stopover either before or after they cross Bass Straight or after rounding Wilsons Promentory on a voyage between Sydney and Melbourne. Some of Australia’s most magnificent mountain scenery lies close behind Lakes Entrance You can drive into the ranges via Omeo and take the High Alpine road to the fantastic skiing resort of Mt Hotham. This drive will take you through tall forests of Mountain Ash before changing to Snow Gums in the higher regions. Snow Chains must be carried if you are taking this road during the winter. Back on the Coast there are also plenty of local places to visit. Bairnsdale and Orbost are not far away and there are a number of lookouts on the road through Kalimna that have fantastic ocean views. The largest wooden bridge in Australia is the railway bridge at Stony Creek. It is located about 22 kilometers north east of lakes Entrance. The Bridge was built in 1916 and is 18.6 meters high and 274 meters in length. It is a great place to visit for a picnic.
